I wanted to take a moment to thank everyone who has contributed to the Banner’s Bombers team for the American Heart Association’s Start! Greater Washington Walk. A year ago today my friend Mike died during the Army 10-Miler race near the Pentagon. He had no idea he had a heart condition and looked and felt like a typical in shape 25-year-old guy.
The thing I remember the most about last October 7 is sitting for hours in Keith and Shannon’s apartment with Adam and all of my work friends, everyone unable to leave, knowing that Mike would have loved that afternoon. Having so many people together, eating Shannon’s cookies, and sharing stories. That day was one of the saddest in my life, but the one positive thing that came out of unspeakable tragedy was stronger connections and a reinforced sense of community. These connections have helped get me through some difficulties in the past year; I think of this as Mike’s legacy.
If you look at our team’s homepage, you’ll see that we’ve blown our fundraising goal out of water with three more weeks until the walk, $6,440. It’s truly amazing. Thank you for your support in the walk and in everything else I do, too.
