I am channeling my mother this afternoon with some righteous indignation. How difficult is it to pay your taxes? On time? These Obama appointees who haven’t paid their taxes on time or owe back taxes make my skin crawl. Tom Daschle, you have been a public servant since before I was born. While I have done no research on this and don’t actually intend to, I’d conservatively guess that you have spoken, lobbied, and voted thousands of times on issues related to raising and cutting taxes. So, it is absolutely obscene that you would have a problem with yours.
If I was elected to any public office, especially one that is empowered to vote on bills that affect taxes and spending for billions of people, I would be paranoid about making sure my taxes were paid on time. I believe it is absolutely reprehensible not to. Maybe I’m really busy and don’t have tons of time to fill out TurboTax online forms every year, or maybe my taxes are complicated because my unusual or numerous assets. Well, that’s what accountants are for. Hire one. Stimulate the economy. Pay someone solely to ensure that your taxes get paid every year and you get a physical, if you don’t have a loved one who wants to do these things for you.
I am pissed. I have paid my taxes since I was 18 and had my first job. It’s not fun and it’s always the time of year that I have to question and reaffirm some of my Democratic-party beliefs. If I have to pay my taxes, then anyone whose salary is being paid by my taxes better freaking pay theirs.
While President Obama is going after all the corrupt, overpaid CEOs in the private sector, he also should get the IRS to audit every single member of the U.S. House of Representatives and the Senate to see the status of their taxes. I’d happily give them 30% of my 2008 annual salary to help fund that.
Actually, I think we could probably get together a team indignant auditors, accountants, or just fiscally savvy individuals to volunteer to take on this project. I nominate the able watchdog Kathryn M. Krentz to run the entire program.

In contrast, when was the last time you heard a sitting president, Republican or Democrat, publicly say, "I screwed up"?
Hey, don't get all paranoid about that deleted comment. Your mother could not find any other way to correct her grammatical error.
I really think Slate would appreciate this article and it's sexy headline. You could do "Pay Your Effing Taxes" or "Stimulate the Economy - Hire an Accountant". Both are great. And we are in complete agreement. Not to mention that this just pisses off conservatives who aren't for taxes anyway (ie. my parents who own a small business). What does this say for Democratic leadership? Not to say that they all refuse to hire a good accountant - but this perception will stick for while.
